An IP geolocation lookup turns an IP address into an approximate physical location: city, region, country, and coordinates on a map. The tool above runs that lookup on any public address, with no account and no key.

How IP geolocation works

Every public IP address belongs to a network that announces it from a physical place. Geolocation databases then map those announcements to a city or region. Accuracy is typically city-level: good enough to localize content or spot a suspicious login, but it will not identify a street address.

Hosting and VPN addresses locate to the data center that runs them, not to the person browsing through them. If your own IP shows a different city than expected, your carrier or VPN is routing you through it.

What an IP geolocation lookup returns

Each result carries the city, region and country, the coordinates behind them, and the network that owns the address. In addition, the map preview confirms the region at a glance. A plausible city name in the wrong country is easy to miss in a text field.

However, the owning network is often the most useful field. It separates a residential carrier from a hosting provider, and that distinction usually explains an unexpected result better than the city does.

Where the location data comes from

Addresses are allocated by regional internet registries, which publish who holds each block. Geolocation databases combine those allocations with routing announcements and network measurements to estimate a location. The registries themselves publish their allocation data through the IANA number resources pages.

None of those sources contain a subscriber address. City-level accuracy is therefore a ceiling, not a limitation of any particular tool.

When the result looks wrong

Three situations explain most surprises. A mobile connection often reports the city of the carrier gateway rather than the handset. Similarly, a corporate network may route all traffic through one office, so every employee appears in the same place. A recently reassigned block can lag in the databases for weeks after it changes hands.

In each case, therefore, the answer is the same. The address is genuinely announced from where the lookup says, even when the person is elsewhere.
